Hope Blossomed at the Premiere of Joyce DiDonato’s “Eden in Olympia”

The cinematic adaptation of the “Eden” project officially premiered at the Athens Concert Hall.

Eden in Olympia premiered successfully on Saturday, January 11, at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall. Through the innovative musical narrative of the cinematic adaptation of the musical Eden, featuring opera star Joyce DiDonato, the enthusiastic audience embarked on a unique journey of environmental awareness and call to action for life on our planet.

The screening culminated with a live performance of the anthem of Eden, “Seeds of Hope,” performed by the Children’s Choir of the Greek National Opera and the intercultural children’s choir El Sistema Greece, under the direction of Konstantina Pitsiakou, director of the Children’s Choir of the Greek National Opera. This performance conveyed a powerful message of unity, collaboration, and global action. Young performers, as agents of change, distributed seeds to the audience—symbols of hope and care for our planet—reminding everyone that every seed represents a promise of life.

Alexandra Mitsotaki, President of the World Human Forum and the inspiration behind the film’s production, emphasized, said “As we helplessly watch the second-largest city of the U.S. superpower burn, it is hard to remain optimistic. But hope needs us. As Václav Havel said, hope is certainly not the same as optimism. It is not the conviction that something will end well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it ends.”

The President of the Megaron Athens Concert Hall Board, Mr. Nikos Pimplis, warmly welcomed the premiere of the cinematic adaptation of the performance that had originally been presented live in the Christos Lambrakis Hall on May 30, 2023. That live performance captivated the audience, not only with its impeccable musical execution in collaboration with the world-renowned baroque orchestra Il Pomo d’Oro, but also with its profound messages, particularly aimed at children who hold humanity’s future in their hands.

Furthermore, during her previous visit, Joyce DiDonato, in collaboration with the Megaron Athens Concert Hall team, visited the migrant hospitality center in Schisto and taught children the song “Seeds of Hope,” combined with activities promoting environmental awareness. This visit underscored the continuing partnership between the two organizations, which will extend into the future with new projects.

The journey of Eden in Olympia continues, with events scheduled in major cities in Greece and abroad, including Venice, Paris, and New York. The film has also been broadcast on significant television channels and platforms worldwide, such as the leading European cultural channel ARTE, Carnegie Hall+, and Greece’s public broadcaster ERT.

The film “Eden in Olympia” is an initiative of the World Human Forum, co-produced with the Athens Concert Hall, UNITEL, and ZDF, and in collaboration with ARTE and ERT.

Together with the musical ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro, French director Olivier Simonnet, and three children’s vocal groups—the Children’s Choir of the Greek National Opera, the Chœurs ECLATS choir from France, and the intercultural El Sistema Greece—Joyce DiDonato presents a landmark project that speaks to the heart of humanity at precisely the right moment.

The celebrated artist guides the audience on an emotional journey, aiming to reconnect viewers with the strength and fragility of nature and to reflect on humanity’s place within our wondrous kaleidoscopic world.

The “Eden” project was previously presented live in Greece at the Athens Concert Hall in 2023, to the delight of audiences and critics alike. DiDonato’s concert was also marked by her visit to the refugee facility in Schisto.

The creation of the film “Eden in Olympia”, shot entirely in the historic and uniquely beautiful setting of Ancient Olympia in April 2024, has three main goals:

  • To serve as a powerful call for the protection of biodiversity and a re-evaluation of humanity’s relationship with nature.
  • To make classical music and opera accessible to all, breaking down barriers and prejudices. The film seeks to bring classical music and opera closer to a wider audience by opening new pathways to these art forms. It is aimed at people who may not be familiar with concert halls or this particular form of artistic expression, offering them the chance to experience the magic of music through the big screen.
  • To provide a unique opportunity for viewers around the world to move beyond the experience of a typical visitor, discovering and experiencing Ancient Olympia in an unprecedented and immersive way. The film highlights the historical and cultural heritage of the site, allowing participants to feel the magic and grandeur of ancient Greece like never before.

The screening of “Eden in Olympia” at the Athens Concert Hall will conclude with a live performance of the Eden anthem, “Seeds of Hope”, by the Children’s Choir of the Greek National Opera and El Sistema Greece, delivering a powerful message of unity, collaboration, and global action.

DESIGN FOR CHANGE : The largest movement of change – by and for children

Save the Date: A Greek shcool participates for the first time in the Annual International Gathering in Dubai November 21-24, 2024

For the first time, Greece is participating in the international “Design for Change” event with the 11th Primary School of Korydallos. This event, titled “Be the Change – Celebration,” is the largest movement created by children and for children and will take place in Dubai from November 21 to 24, 2024. This global movement, which empowers and activates children, started in India and now counts more than seventy member countries worldwide. This year, it has also launched in Greece, with the initiative of the World Human Forum.

The “Design for Change” movement is supported by enthusiastic and dedicated individuals – educators, parents, community leaders, artists, athletes, social entrepreneurs, and others – who aim to instill the belief of “I CAN” in every child. The school from Korydallos, which participated in the pilot program of Design for Change – Greece along with other schools, was chosen to represent Greece because of the unique and effective solutions that its students created to address the vehicle parking issues in the Korydallos area. Three students and their supervising teacher will attend the 4th gathering to present the program they designed and implemented and to meaningfully exchange experiences, ideas, and perspectives on culture, life, and everyday life with students from other countries.

“The essence and uniqueness of this program is that it motivates people – in this case, children – to create their own conditions and frameworks for society rather than simply ‘settling’ for existing systems that often don’t work. It is inspiration, interaction, and participation at their best and most progressive form,” stated Dr. Anezina Solomonidou, Planetologist, Special Scientist at the Hellenic Space Center, and Greece’s representative for the World Human Forum.

With the simple and effective model “Feel, Imagine, Do, Share” (FIDS), children worldwide gain the skills to design a better and more sustainable future – and to unlock the superpower of “I CAN” starting today! Based on the principles of design thinking, the FIDS model encourages children to “FEEL” (observe and recognize a situation that bothers them), “IMAGINE” (think of a way to change it), “DO” (work in teams to implement their solution), and “SHARE” (share their solution with the world), inspiring others to say “I CAN.”

This event is a unique opportunity for students to leave their positive mark on the world by showcasing their work on an international stage. It also allows them to be inspired and contribute to spreading the message that everyone can be a driver of positive change, while enhancing their creative thinking, leadership skills, and promoting innovation in education.

For more information about the program, click here.

Discover here a series of interactive educational activities to implement FIDS with your children. Download all the tools to inspire your children to unlock the superpowers of the “I CAN” belief!

Special thanks to Aegean Airlines for supporting the World Human Forum in representing Greece at the international “Design for Change” program gathering.

GREEN TALES for a Greener planet

The GREEN TALES project aims to enhance green awareness education for underprivileged children in Europe through arts and digital tools. It involves 100 children and 12 artists from Spain, Germany, Iceland, and Turkey creating 8 short stories with drawings, sounds, music… on the 4 elements (earth, air, water, fire) and 1 final animated movie that will bring together a synthesis of the 8 short stories. The project includes a capacity-building residency for artists, teachers’ training on green awareness and digital skills, workshops with children and a toolkit for teachers and guidelines for artists. Children and artists will present their work in schools, with recommendations for holistic green awareness teaching through artistic practices. The project boosts European diversity and talent, aiming to broaden networks and disseminate results within educational and environmental spheres. Green Tales is a pioneering project led by the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation, dedicated to developing illustrated children’s tales in the form of animated movies. These tales, created by children in primary classes across four different countries, are brought to life with the expertise of artists, storytellers, illustrators and sound/music producers. World Human Forum is amongst the founding members of the project and enthusiastic to spread its message to all five continents.
