SASHA WALTZ & GUESTS: In C

September 8 & 9 , 21:00 Venue Μ1

In 2021, the German choreographer Sasha Waltz developed a choreographic system based on Terry Riley’s revolutionary open score In C (1964). The choreography is a playful system of 53 choreographic forms for structured improvisation with rules and laws. Within this set of rules, the individual performer has creative freedom but always in relation to the group. Thus, In C is a democratic process: it is a piece about the individual as part of a group and reflects the dynamic relationship between unique decisions and collective choices. It plays with the constantly shifting roles of the follower, the leader, and the intermediary between the two, creating a horizontal network of creativity. In C premiered in a live stream from Berlin’s Radialsystem and has since been met with great enthusiasm from audiences internationally.

Sasha Waltz began her involvement with dance at the age of five. Between 1983 and 1986, she attended the School for New Dance Development in the Netherlands, and afterward, she moved to America, where she collaborated with leading choreographers such as Tristan Honsinger, Frans Poelstra, Mark N Tompkins, and David Zambrano.

Her significant global recognition dates back to her second trilogy, which focused on the theme of the body and consisted of the performances Körper, S, and noBody, with the latter being presented at the Avignon Festival in 2002. The renowned choreographer Sasha Waltz is coming to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall for the first time as part of an initiative by the World Human Forum, supported by the German Embassy in Greece.
