Last night, we had the privilege of hosting the renowned historian #MariaEfthymiou as part of the 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture program, supported by the Municipality of Elefsina. Her captivating lecture, titled “Key Points of the History of Hellenism,” offered an insightful historical overview of the journey of Hellenism and the formation of its identity through the ages. During the lecture, the main pillars of the history of Hellenism were analyzed, with emphasis on the diffusion of the Greek presence and language in the eastern Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Adriatic Sea, and southern Italy. The development of shipping, which served as a catalyst for the expansion of Hellenism beyond its geographical borders, was also highlighted. Additionally, key aspects of the Byzantine and Ottoman periods that shaped its historical path were interpreted, along with moments from modern history that underscored the achievements of the Hellenic state. Alexandra Mitsotaki, prolonged the discussion, enriching the evening with her thoughtful insights and reflections.
